Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt
Hilary Apfelstadt, conductor of the OSU Women's Glee Club since 1993, is the associate professor of choral studies and coordinator of graduate conducting at OSU. She also conducts the Chorale, supervises Mastersingers, and teaches conducting and choral repertory courses. Her degrees are from the University of Toronto, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Choirs under her direction have sung at regional and national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and at regional conferences of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), as well as at Ohio Music Educators Association (OMEA) conferences. A frequent clinician, Dr. Apfelstadt has conducted numerous all-state and honor choruses and adjudicated throughout the U.S. and Canada. Currently she serves as president-elect of the Central Division region of ACDA, and is a member of the national ACDA committee on research and publications. She has sung with the Robert Shaw Institute Singers for several years, performing in France and at Carnegie Hall. In addition to her duties at OSU, she is Music Director at Linworth United Methodist Church in Columbus. Professor James Gallagher James Gallagher conducts the Mens Glee Club, the Symphonic Choir, and teaches conducting, vocal pedagogy and choral repertoire. Dr. Patricia O'Toole Patricia O'Toole is the current conductor of the University Chorus for Autumn Quarter 98, becoming the fourth director in five quarters, preceeded by David Monseur, Joe Janisch, and Mike Martin. Prior to her appointment to Ohio State, Dr. O'Toole was an Assistant Professor of Music at The State University of New York's (SUNY's) Buffalo Campus. She also founded The Buffalo Youth Choir, an inner-city grant supported organization. While in Ney York state, she was the Repertoire and Standards Chair for Women's Music and for Multicultural Music. Dr. O'Toole recieved her Ph.D. in music education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she also recieved a Masters in Conducting with Robert Fountain and a Masters in Music Education. Her dissertation was named Honorable Mention for the American Educational Research Association's Outstanding Dissertation Award for research methodology. During her graduate studies, Dr. O'Toole directed the Madison Children's Choir and recorded the CD Scrapbook. Dr. O'Toole has extensive experience as a guest conductor and as a clinician at state and national conferences. She is presently Chair of the Gender Research in Music Education special Interest Group of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) and she will have an article focusing on the treatment of girls in choral music education in December's issue of the Choral Journal. |
