About Symphonic Choir
Thanks to Prof. Gallagher for the following information
The Ohio State University Symphonic Choir, James Gallagher, Conductor, was established in 1937, offering talented students the opportunity to perform a variety of significant choral literature while representing the University and the School of Music. Conducted for thirty years by its founder, Louis Diercks, the Choir soon gained national recognition when, in its second season, it was awarded first place in the Columbia Broadcasting Company's "Choral Quest," a national competition.
The Syphonic Choir has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe and has been heard in New York City's Town Hall and the Lisner Auditorium, Washington, D.C. They have appeared at national conferences of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, the Music Teachers Association and Music Educators National Conference. The Choir has performed with the Atlanta, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Columbus Symphony Orchestras, and participated in the American premiere of Paul Hindemith's "Das Unaufhorliche," a major oratorio written in 1931.
In 1991, The Symphonic Choir was on of four choirs to participate in performances of the Mahler, Symphony No. 8 with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Robert Shaw, Conductor. The work was then recorder by Telarc. To hear part of that performance on Real Audio, Click HERE.
Following a performance with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Robert Shaw, Conductor, the Atlanta JOURNAL stated, "They sang with precision and their tone was full and well-balanced... good quality and excellent musicianship." The Cleveland PLAIN DEALER commented on "... discipline, blend and clarity... great feeling of rhythmic momentum."
Now in its 61st season, the Choir continues to grow and to enhance those musical qualities which have established it as a first-rate choral ensemble.
